The old man of the forest

Orang utans are closely related to humans, both genetically and in appearance. Orang utan means "man of the forest" in Malay, the predominant language in the countries where it is found. Unfortunately, like all the other great apes of Asia and Africa, hunting, the exotic pet trade and deforestation have driven orang utans to the brink of extinction, and sizable populations now only occur in shrinking pockets of forest in Borneo and Sumatra. These endearing apes however are safe and content within the protected sanctuary of the Sepilok Conservation Center in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo.

Rainforest Retreat

A few pictures from  a recent visit to Sinharaja. An inland adventure in the middle of the dive season. We did find a few potential spots for some freshwater diving!

I love Sinharaja. both the forest and the surrounding villages. It epitomises everything of the Sri Lankan wet zone. Rugged terrain, dense forests, mountain springs with clear fresh water, quiet villages hidden among forest glades and patches of rice paddy gleaming in the sun; rich golden hues contrasting against the deep green of the forested mountains.
