Northeast of Maiyangana, this is an area where rural traditions are still alive.  A place where people of mixed Sinhalese and Veddah descent live off the land and give us a glimpse into the past of life in Sri Lanka's rural hinterland.

Rainforest Retreat

A few pictures from  a recent visit to Sinharaja. An inland adventure in the middle of the dive season. We did find a few potential spots for some freshwater diving!

I love Sinharaja. both the forest and the surrounding villages. It epitomises everything of the Sri Lankan wet zone. Rugged terrain, dense forests, mountain springs with clear fresh water, quiet villages hidden among forest glades and patches of rice paddy gleaming in the sun; rich golden hues contrasting against the deep green of the forested mountains.

Dreaming of Yala

Wasgomuwa, Sri Lanka - rural tranquility

The water is calm to form mirror like reflections on the surface. Puffy white clowds suspend themselves in the blue sky partially obscuring the blue mountains in the background, and the fresh morning air carries an earthy scent of grass, flowers and cow dung. The chirping of birds interrupted by the gentle whirl of bicycle wheels along the rutted road shaded by lush foliage.
